Last weekend, I facilitated the second Startup Weekend Sheffield in North England. Doesn’t sound as one of these fancy locations, I know, but it turned out to be one of these hidden jewels: The city has a great vibe, people are really nice and the surrounding landscape is wonderful.
The event itself got it all: Really motivated and committed organisers, a perfect technical setup (we even had a working live stream!), a venue open 24h and great mentors and judges as well. Friday night, Mayel and Josef from Babelverse held an inspiring keynote about their beginnings at Startup Weekend Athens in 2010 and their crazy startup life during the past 3 years.
We then had 21 ideas presented during the 60 seconds pitch fire from which 9 were executed during the weekend. They ranged from news aggregation tools to virtual learning environments, games and process management tools.
Saturday and Sunday, the mentors came in to give valuable advice to the teams who benefited widely from their broad entrepreneurial experience. All teams worked really hard throughout the weekend, some even refused the late night popcorn (not too much sugar, please) and others slept about 3 hours during the whole weekend.
Sunday, you could sense the tension as not only the recognition of the judges and a working prototype were at stake but also some really cool prizes for the winners. In the evening, after a round of test pitches, all 9 teams did a great pitch and the judges took some time to award the prizes. Nevertheless, they were very clear about the winner: Team Processed won this Startup Weekend with one of only two B2B products of the weekend. They developed a system which makes process management in distributed teams a lot easier and faster.
The second prize went to Buck-it, your personalized bucket list for special experiences (e.g. a sky dive) and third came Rendezvous, an app for frequent travelers who want to meet new people with similar interests at their travel destination. Additionally, Benjamin Hooper from Giftyfy received the special design prize. Congrats to all the winners and all the attendees! You did a great job. Now it’s important that you continue the great work after the weekend! We also had a great time at the after party which ended around sunrise the next morning.
A big thank you goes to the amazing organisers Samantha, Chris, Harriet, James, Eve, Rob and George! I couldn’t have had a better start into my time as Startup Weekend facilitator! I hope to see at least some of you again at our own Startup Weekend in Stuttgart in November.
